How to wean DD off milk bottle?
How to wean DD off milk bottle?
My DD who is turning 3 this year is still drinking her milk with milk bottle. I have tried pouring milk into sippy cup for her but she adamantly refused to drink it.
I know dentists advise kids to wean off milk bottle by 2 yo, but my girl is so 'sticky' to her bottle that she would refuse to drink her milk in a cup. Any cup. What should I do?
Would really appreciate any advice or suggestion. Many thanks!

Hi Angelight!
My DS also got this problem! He is turning 3 this year still want to drink Ribena and milk in his bottle. He can drink from cup and water bottle with straw but he loves his bottle!
The only time he doesn't drink from bottle is when he goes to school so I am hoping next year to put him into longer school hours to wean him off!
Any experienced mummy can help share will be great!

ds1 is still drinking from bottle. I mean, he can and wants to drink from cup, but he will take ages to finish a glass of milk if drinking by cup. so, I usually would just give him bottle. faster, drink more (if put water in cup, lagi slow) and no spills.
but I somehow I dun feel good giving him bottle, I thought that would make him more lazy??

Just to share my experience... my kids have this perception that drinks in "adult" cups/glasses with straw are always very tasty cos when we go out for meals and order drinks like ice-milo, coke etc, we usually let them sip a bit only. So when we were weaning them off bottles, we gave them their milk in adult cups with straw. Never turn back since then. Now they drink in any cup without straw in good speed too. I guess you need to find a way that will entice them to drink from cup?
Weaned both my kids when they were about 3yrs old. DD was more challenging then DS.
I pick an 'auspicious' day like, their birthday or X'mas or New Year (basically a significant event). About 2 weeks b4, we gave them a pep talk about how they are now big girl/boy so no more milk in milk bottles. Showed them pictures of kids with tooth decay and roped in their PD to give them a pep talk as well.
Weaned them off the bottle in the day when they were about 2yrs old and by about 3yrs old, weaned them off the milk bottle b4 sleep as well.
And most importantly, once you tell them starting xxx date/day no more bottle, make sure you stick with that decision no matter how they scream and cry, even if it is in the middle of the night. Giving in means prolonging the battle.

Re: How to wean DD off milk bottle?
some kids still using the bottle after reaching home from primary school.....ssssssh!
Sorry for my ignorance.. but for mummies who have successfully weaned their kiddos off milk bottles: do you see that their milk intake has reduced significantly compared to before weaning?
I remember after I was weaned off the milk bottle at abt 4/5 YO, I started taking lesser milk till I refused them unless it is in milo. So, I'm not weaning my gals yet coz of this worry. They still badly need their pediasure..
TIA

some children stopped drinking milk especially formula milk once they had moved from bottle to cup. Some said it is due to the smell of milk, especially formula milk. Can't smell the milk when drinking from bottle.
If the child is on formula milk, it is advisable to move to a covered cup even though the child is capable of drinking from opened cup.
agreed with funz on the approach to take.
