Hi

I'm interested to know more about the Stellar program too. I presume my gal's school will be using this program as well as just received the book list from school and it states no text books required for English.

Thanks for sharing.

Hi. sorry I forgot what the Stellar stands for but I remembered attending a P-T talk and basically what they do is by themes. Eg now in p2 they have themes like, "Life in a shell", "Chinese Culture and Heritage", "The Weather" etc. Each theme comes with a story which the teacher will read/teach via projector in class. Through these stories, the kids would be taught different aspects of grammar ie adjectives, adverbs, connectors eg. The kids would be given a list of vocabulary based on the theme in which they would be tested on about once a week ( spelling task). The worksheets which are done in class would be based on that taught.

Don't worry about not having a textbook as these worksheets would be returned to the kids regularly in an English file and you can go through revision with them. Frankly speaking, I hardly go through the file except for the vocabulary list as to me grammar is grammar and I let my kids practice on assessment books.

Parent support Group- what we do, well, we try to serve as a link between school and parents. We have meeting with the Vice-P intermittently to give feedback to the school on certain issues pertaining to the school and she would in turn let us know of any new programs that are run in the school and clarify any queries. We do help to mobilize parents when the school needs us to help in some events, like outings, reading program etc. We have organised parenting talks where we would invite specialists like child psychistrist, education counsellors to the school to give their opinions on various topics.

Let me know if you are interested to join and I will let you know when we have the next meeting. We have not had many meetings this year as the group comprimises of working parents and everyone have been busy especially our chairman, Kelly.

Hi, BPPS does better in their aesthetics ie dance, choir, band. I do not think they are promoting any niche sports as yet.

Parents of Beacon Kids,

1. will you have any difficulty doing revision and following what has been taught in school given the 'IT' type of syllabus?
2. are you concerned about what type of CCA's Beacon will introduce to their first batch of upper primary? Any idea, what is in the pipeline?

TIA.

Hi Jedamum,

I'd love to hear what existing parents have to see as my kids will be going to Beacon next year (I'm a PV this year and have almost completed my 40 hours, so should be able to get in  )

From what I know Beacon has swimming lessons for P1 children in Term 2 and Term 3 (7 weeks each for 4 classes at a time). I have heard they don't have homework (although this could be just this child who completes it at school).

But I liked the way the teachers behave with the kids and parents - also the fact that the Principal and Vice-Principal is pretty hands-on. Whenever I am there I see them monitoring the children (I do a reading programme twice a week in the mornings)

Hi mums and dads,
Two schools that I have shortlisted in BP are BPPS and Beacon. Beacon is nearer and I know the govt is pumping in $$ for IT as it is the future school. However, BPPS has a proven track record. I am prepared to be a PV in either one but I have not made up my mind yet. The only setback of Beacon is that it doesn't have any PSLE results and I am not sure whether all the technology and gadgets they are using can adequately prepare the kids for PSLE. Any input from you? I am due to register in 2011 as my child will be in P1 in 2012.

Assuming you have the same chance of getting into either school, go for BPPS as your first choice. Otherwise, go for the one which you have a better chance of getting into (eg. distance-wise).

I am a PV in Beacon so here is my 2 cents worth. From what I have seen about the teachers, pricipal and vp at Beacon I have liked so far. They seem to be quite committed to the children and since this is the second batch here, seem to know all the kids by names.

BPPS is more well known and till Beacon that was my first choice. But BPPS will surely go for balloting for < 1 km in 2C, so unless you are a PV there, there is a very slim chance that you get in. Beacon last year had no balloting for 2C, but did not take in any children beyond 1 km. Also I know that from this year 2010 intake there are many siblings coming in and so balloting for 2C seems to be a distinct possibility.

If you have any q about Beacon, you can PM me, I'll be happy to answer.
