If FAIL Chinese in PSLE, what will happen?

Unlike entry to Primary Schools, admission into Secondary Schools is based on meritocracy. PSLE results are used as key admission criteria. Discuss everything related to PSLE and selection of Secondary Schools here.

Hi, does anyone know what will happen if the child fails his Chinese in PSLE? Does he have to stay back 1 year or automatically goes to Normal stream even if his other 3 subjects got A?

thank you ;)

I understand from prev PSLE briefing that if u fail 1 subject, chances is that u will go below 200. But I don't think anyone will be retained for doing badly in psle.

same question that i have... and i've checked with MOE. PSLE takes into account all 4 subjects. So even if you failed English or Chinese or any subject, it doesn't matter. what matters is your combined score that determine whether you go express or normal academic.

Really depends on how you do for all your subjects. And even if you fail a subject, it'll still depends on how badly you fail.

Just to share that though he didn't fail, one of my daughter's friend had a C for Chinese some years ago. He had a T-score of around 255 (I can't remember the exact score). He had A* for all the other 3 subjects.

My friend's dd took PSLE 2010. A,A,A,D for Chinese but T-score qualifies for express stream.

if fail Chinese -
they wlll just compute your T-score, for 4 subjects (including the failed Chinese subject) -
then, check whether your child's T-score can qualify or not, for Normal stream, or qualify for Express stream.
T-score will take into consideration the performance of the entire P6 cohort (thousands of P6ers), who sat for PSLE, that year, that batch.

kid still can get posted to Secondary 1, by MOE -
if can qualify for Normal (Academic), or qualify for Normal (Technical) or for Express stream.
if can qualify for any of the above stream, then no need to re-sit PSLE.

note
T-score is valid & applicable, only under existing, current T-score system.
(applicable, up till the last year, 2020 : last batch of children, born in 2008)

under the new points AL system (implement, from 2021 onwards) : not sure, how they handle one failed Chinese subject

If I am not wrong, a student will need to retake PSLE only if there is a U grade in one of the subjects.
U is considered as did not meet the minimum requirement.
D and E are below 50% but need not retake PSLE.
E grade is from 20% to 35% at school level.
You will notice that the school does not recommend all who fail a particular subject (whether mother tongue or otherwise) to take the subject at foundation level.
Usually, it's set at about 30% for school level or whatever grade that the school thinks the student could be at risk of getting a U grade at standard level in PSLE.
Please double check with the school though.
