Journeying with our Children, Achieving their Aspirations
1. The Ministry of Education (MOE) is strengthening its support for parents as they guide their children in planning their education and career journey. This is in line with the national SkillsFuture movement’s efforts to empower individuals to make informed choices in school and beyond graduation.
2. In collaboration with industry partners and post-secondary education institutes (PSEIs), the Education and Career Guidance (ECG) Fair was held on 16 and 17 September 2016, focusing on three of Singapore’s key growth sectors – Built Environment, Healthcare and Engineering. For the first time, a session for parents was organised as part of the ECG Fair, providing parents insights on ways to guide their children through the diverse education and career pathways. Parents had the opportunity to hear from industry players – such as Alexandra Health System, Building and Construction Authority, Institution of Engineers Singapore and MOH Holdings – and early career entrants who shared tips on how parents can guide their children to make informed choices as well as the key attributes that employers look for in employees. Additionally, parents also had the opportunity to converse with ECG Counsellors on-site.
3. To better support parents in guiding their children to make informed choices through discovering and developing their interests and abilities, the ECG Guide for parents previously titled Nurturing Dreams, Guiding Our Children for Their Future has also been enhanced to provide more tips on education and career exploration. The guide will now be distributed to parents of children in the key education stages of Primary 6, Secondary 4 and 5 and Pre-U Year 2 and 3. Renamed Journeying with Our Children, Achieving Their Aspirations, the guide will be distributed from November 2016 onwards.
