1. The National School Games (NSG) 2017 Opening Ceremony will officially mark the start of the annual inter-school games. The Games will be opened by Guest-of-Honour Dr Janil Puthucheary, Minister of State for Education, at the Singapore Sports Hub this afternoon (25 January). This year, about 57,000 student athletes from more than 365 schools will participate in 29 different sports.
2. The NSG, which runs from 9 January to 30 August this year, is the largest and most extensive annual youth sports event in Singapore, with more than 400 sports championship titles contested. Highly-anticipated by student athletes, the NSG is a culmination of their efforts in preparation for the games.
3. The NSG provides opportunities for character-building among our student athletes, as they pursue sporting excellence. Not only do they acquire and hone sports-related skills, they also learn to be resilient and daring, while finding fulfilment in their hard work and training sessions.
4. Schools will also conduct their own symbolic ceremony throughout February 2017 to mark the start of the NSG. This will allow students to show their support for their school representatives and better appreciate the value of sports participation.
