Positive Outcomes of the School-to-Work Transition Programme

1.The prototyping of the School-to-Work (S2W) Transition Programme by the Ministry of Education (MOE) with Ministry of Social and Family Development (MSF) and SG Enable has yielded positive outcomes for students of the first graduating cohort, their parents and employers.

  • Of the students who participated in the prototype, 80% were successfully employed, with 83% of them staying employed for at least 6 months.
  • Students also felt they had a sense of self-worth in being able to earn an income and contribute to their families.
  • Parents shared that the programme helped their child acquire work skills and habits such as getting along with co-workers. Parents also reported greater levels of self-confidence, independence and capability in carrying out daily activities among their children.
  • Employers reported a more inclusive culture as their staff developed more positive attitudes towards persons with disabilities.

About S2W Transition Programme

2. In 2014, MOE, MSF and SG Enable embarked on prototyping the S2W Transition Programme with five1 Special Education (SPED) schools. The programme helps to facilitate a smooth transition to work for graduating students with disabilities.

3. The S2W Transition Programme begins in the student’s final year of schooling and extends for up to one year after the student graduates. It aims to provide a supporting ‘bridge’ for students to make the transition from school to the workplace, by facilitating suitable job training pathways for SPED students with different disability profiles who have the potential to work. SPED schools and SG Enable assess and identify students for the S2W Transition Programme and matched them to a suitable training or employment pathway based on their strengths, job preferences and interests. This facilitates a seamless transition for these students to varied job placement, training opportunities upon graduation, and promotes successful integration into society.

4. With the support of different industry partners including the Singapore Business Federation Foundation, the S2W Transition Programme is able to provide a range of post-school training and employment pathways that cater to the diverse needs of the students. This includes a structured group internship programme, where participants are attached to an organisation for authentic work experiences supported by job coaches.
