Thanks, Adwin!  I still find the “model” answer rather confusing.  Sigh.

Let G be the amount of money Grace had at first.
Let J be the amount of money Janice had at first

(1) G = J

(2) 4 * (G – 245) = J – 74

Substitute (1) into (2), we get
4G – 980 = G – 74
=> 3G = 906
=> G = 302

So both Grace and Janice had $302 at first #.

I will appreciate if someone can come up with a “model” solution!
