Question

Hi. pls, help me with these questions.

A pencil cost $1.20 and a pen cost $2.90. Jasimah bought an equal number of such pencils and pens. She spent $32.30 more on the pens than on the pencils. How many pencils and pens did she buy altogether?

 Muthu spent $121 on a pair of shoes and 4/7 of the remaining money on a number of shirts. He had  1/6 of the original sum of money left. How much money did he have at first?

Source: ?

Answer

a) Let n be the number of pencils or pens she bought.

2.90n – 1.20n = 32.30
1.70n = 32.30
n = 32.30/1.70 = 19

So total number of pencils and pens she bought = 2 * 19 = 38 #

b) Let S be the sum of money he has at first.

So, 3/7 (S – 121) = 1/6S
S – 121 = 7/3*1/6S
S – 121 = 7/18S
11/18S = 121
S = $198 #

The above are not strictly done by models, and it will be helpful if someone can do it by models.
