M – W = 32
=> M = 32 + W … (1)
M – 60 = 5 (W – 220)
=> M = 5W – 1100 + 60
=> M = 5W – 1040 … (2)
Substituting (1) into (2):
32 + W = 5W – 1040
=> 4W = 1072
=> W = 268
So M = 32 + 268 = 300
Therefore total number of participants at the start of the race = 268 + 300 = 568 #
