Question

Lionel spent 1/3 of his money on an iPad and 2 watches. The iPad cost 4times as much as each watch. He then spent 3/5 of his remaining money on a new mobile phone. The mobile phone cost 1302 more than each watch. (A) what fraction of his money did Lionel spend on the watches? (B) find the amount of money that Lionel had at first?

Answer

iP—[u][u][u][u]

W—[u]

After buying an ipad and 2 watches,  he has spent $6u and this 1/3 of his money.

Total money [——6u——][——6u——][——6u——]  = 18u

(A)  2W = 2u  Therefore, fraction of money spent on watches = 2u/18u = 1/9

(B)  3/5 of remaining money spent on mobile phone => 3/5 x 12u =  36u/5

MP = u + 1302   (1302 more than watch)

Hence 36u/5  = u + 1302

36u = 5u + 6510

31u = 6510 => u = 210

Therefore,  the amount Lionel has at first = 210 x 18 = $3780
