Question

Hi, can I please have help on this question? Thank You!

A group of boys shared some sweets among themselves. When each boy took 6 sweets each, there were 24 sweets left over. When each boy took 8 sweets, there was no remainder. How many sweets were there altogether?

Answer

Excess and shortage concept

Difference in number of  sweets for each boy = 8-6 = 2

Difference in total number of sweets in 8s and in 6s = 24+ 0 = 24  (excess and shortage difference)

Total number of boys = 24/2 = 12

Therefore, total number of sweets = 12 x 6 + 24 = 96 or 12 x 8 = 96
