Question

Answer

Let the total cookies James has at first be u.

(1/3)u   cookies  –> 15 containers

(2/5)u   cookies —> 6 boxes

Then,   one box cookie – one container cookie = 14

[(2/5)u ]/6   –    [(1/3)u] /15   =  14

(2/30)u – (1/45) u = 14      <—– x 90 by both sides

6u – 2u = 1260   => 4u = 1260

u = 1260/4 = 315

Therefore, James has 315 cookies at first.
