Question

Answer

(b) If 9y is the longest => 9y > 7y + 11

          Let 9y – 7y = 11 to find the smallest possible y.

           2y = 11 + y = 5.5 but since y is a whole number, y = 6

Check:  9x 6 = 54,      7×6 = 42   42+11 = 53     so 6 is the smallest possible y to make 9y > 7y+11

Hence y = 6 is the smallest possible y for 9y > 7y+11
