b)The ratio of the number of adults tickets sold to the number of children tickets sold is 1:3.The cost of an adult ticket is $30 more that the cost of a child ticket.How many adult tickets were sold.

How to tackle this question?

Answer

 (a)                Ticket sales

      Child      [u][3500]

      Adult      [u]

Total ticket sales = 11500

2u+3500 = 11500

2u = 8000  => u = 4000

Adult ticket sales was $4000

(b)                   Ticket Qty                Ticket Price

      Child             3p                              c

      Adult              p                             c+30

3pc = 7500  => pc = 2500

p(c+30) = 4000

pc + 30p = 4000

2500 + 30p = 4000

p = 1500/30 = 50

Hence number of adult tickets sold was 50

  1. If adult ticket sales is 1U, then child sales is 1U+3500

Given total sales 11500

1U+1U+3500=11500

2U=8000

U=4000

So $4000 was collected from sales of adult ticket.

  1. If number of adult tickets sold is N, then number of child tickets sold is 3N

If price of 1 child ticket is P, then price of 1 adult ticket is P+30

3NP= 4000+3500=7500

NP=2500

N*(P+30)= 4000

2500+30N=4000

30N=1500

N=50

So 50 adult tickets were sold.
