Question

Three girls had 144 sweets altogether.Amy gave some of her sweets to Bella and Bella’s sweets were doubled.Then,Bella gave some of her sweets to Cindy and Cindy’s sweets were doubled.As a result,the three had an equal number of sweets each.How many sweets did Bella have at first?

How to tackle this question?

Answer

Think working backwards is easier as finally all 3 of them has same equal number of sweets meaning

Finally , each has 144/3=48 sweets

Cindy sweets were doubled after receiving  some sweet from Bella

So Cindy has 48/2=24 sweets before receving 24 sweets from Bella

And Bella has 48+24=72 sweets before giving to Cindy

So Bella originally has 72/2=36 sweets

Working backwards,  Total = 144 => Each has 144/3 = 48 in the end.

Cindy has doubled after Belle gave her some sweets => Cindy was 24 and given 24

Belle has 48 + 24 = 72 and halving this is Belle’s original = 72/2 = 36.

Check:

Amy        [           48           ][       36        ]   Original = 84

Belle       [36+36-24 =48]  Original = 36

Cindy     [  24 + 24 = 48 ]   Original = 24

Total = 84 + 36 + 24 = 144
