Question

Joanne had a rectangular piece of paper,36cm by 23.5cm.She cut out as many squares as possible from the paper. The side of each cut square is 5cm.

a)How many squares did Joanne cut out

b)What area of the paper was left?

How to tackle this question?

Answer

(a)  Paper is 36cm  x 23.5cm

On the 36-cm side, 35 is the maximum number divisible by 5 so   7   5-cm squares can be cut.

On the 23.5-cm side,  20 is the maximum number divisible by 5 so   4   5-cm squares can be cut.

So total 5-cm squares can be cut = 7 x 4 = 28

(b)  Total area for the 28 5-cm squares = 5 x 5 x 28 = 700

Total area of paper = 36 x 23.5 = 846

Hence area of paper left = 846 – 700 = 146 cm2
