Answer
Key point to take note:
Total books Ben and Jann have is the same before and after Jann gave books to Ben.
Ben has 1 part and Jann has 5 parts initially. Total 6 parts.
After Jann gave Ben 4 books, Ben has 1 part and Jann has 3 parts total 4 parts.
So since total # is the same, it is good to make the total parts to be the same in both situation, that is the LCM of 6 and 4 which is 12.
So initially,
Ben has 2 parts and Jann has 10 parts.
After Jann gave Ben 4 books, Ben has 3 parts and Jann has 9 parts.
Or 1 part = 4 books
So Jann has 4*9=36 books in the end.
Ben Jann
At first u 5u
Jann gave Ben books +4 -4
In the end p 3p
u+4 = p
5u-4 = 3p = 3(u+4)
5u-3u = 12 +4
2u = 16
u = 8
Jann’s books at first = 5 x 8 = 40
Jann’s books in the end = 40-4 = 36
