Question

Answer

First question:

Start from the back may be better, as in the end Sofian has 0.25 or 1/4 as much as Ben in the end.

If Sofian had $ u in the end, Ben had $ 4u in the end.

Before giving to chaity, Sofian had $ u + 320 and Ben had $ 4u + 320

Given the ratio being 1 : 2

2 ( u + 300 ) = 1( 4u + 300)

2u + 600 = 4u + 300       subtract both sides by 2u + 300

2u = 300

u = 150

150 + 300 = 450

So Sofian had $450 at first.

Second question:

If we start from beginning, Sofia had 0.8 or 8/10 or 4/5 as much as Ben.

So if Sofia had $ 4u, Ben had $ 5u at first.

After each gave $420 to charity, the ratio became 1 : 3

3( 4u – 420) = 1( 5u – 420)

12u – 1260 = 5u – 420     subtract both sides with 5u – 1260

7u = 840

u = 120

5u = 5 * 120 = 600

Ben had $600 at first.
