Question

Answer

(a) Each cupcakes costs 2/3 as much as a muffin. And each piece of waffle cost $0.2 more than a cupcake.

If each muffin costs $3u, each cupcakes costs $2u and each waffle costs $( 2u + 0.2).

 Ratio of 3 cupcakes : 8 muffins : 15 waffles

= 3*2u : 8 * 3u : 15( 2u + 0.2)   divide all by 3

=2u : 8u : 10u+1

Kevan spent 3/8 of his money on 3 cupcakes and  8 muffins. He left with ( 1-3/8) or 5/8 of his money, and spent (5/8) *(4/5) = 4/8 of his money on 15 waffles.

(2u + 8u ) /3 = (10u + 1)/4 multiply both sides by 4

(10u + 1)  = 40u/3

So Ratio of 3 cupcakes : 8 muffins : 15 waffles

= 2u : 12u : 40u/3

= 6: 36 : 40

=3 : 12 : 20

(b)  (10u + 1)  = 40u/3

30u + 3 = 40u

10u = 3

u =0.3

3u = 0.9

Each muffin costs $ 0.9.
