Answer

(a) The amount collected from sales of watch was $720 more than the amount collected from the clocks, so

Sales of clocks = ($ 2880 – $720)/2 = 2160/2 = $1080

(b)

 If u clocks were sold, 3u watches were sold.

Cost of a clock = 1080/u

Cost of a watches = ( 1080 + 720) /3u= 600/u

Given

(1080/u )- (600/u) = 40    multiply both sides by u

1080 – 600 = 40u

40u = 480

u = 12

1080/12 = 90

So cost of a clock was $90.

Check : 1080/90 = 12

12* 3 = 36

36*50 = 1800

1800+ 1080 = 2880
