Question

Answer

(a) 20% = 20/100

= 1/5 (Answer for part a)

(b)

When female left -> 4u, to find original number of females:

80% -> 4u (since 20% left)

100% -> 4u/80 × 100 = 5u

While original number of males = 3u + 169

So:

3u + 169 + 5u = 785

8u + 169 = 785

8u = 616

1u -> 616 ÷ 8

= 77

4u + 3u = 7u (people remaining at the funfair)

7u -> 77 × 7

= 539 (Answer for part b)

If at first there were 5u females, there were (785 – 5u) males. 20% of the females left, meaning left with 4u females in the fun fair. The left over males were 785 – 5u – 169 = 616 – 5u.

Given the ratio of remaining female : male = 4 : 3

(a)

4( 616 – 5u ) = 3(4u)

2464 – 20u = 12u

32u = 2464

u = 77

Ratio of female left = 77/785

(b) Number of people remains = 4u + 616 -5u = 616- 77 = 539

Check:  5* 77 = 385

785 – 385 = 400

400 – 169 = 231

4* 77 = 308

308 : 231 = 4 : 3  Checked
