Question

Answer

(a) 7 days for one $1 coin. So 196 days, there were 196/7 = 28  $1 coins.

2 coins per day so total 196 * 2= 392 coins for 196 days.

Total coins = 392 + 28 = 420

(b) Take out all the $1 coins, the amout for  all 20 cents and 50 cents coin = 137.9 – 28 = $109.9

If there are u 20 cents coins , there were (392 – u) 50 cents coin.

0.2u + 0.5(392 – u) = 109.9

0.3u = 196 – 109.9

0.3u = 86.1

u = 287

there were 287 20 cents coins.

Check : 0.2(287) + 0.5(392 – 287) = 57.4 + 52.5 = 109.9

109.9 + 28 = 137. 9  checked.
