Question

Answer

John earned 5 points for correct answers and 2 points for wrong answer.

If he answered u questions correctly, he answered (20 – u) questions wrongly.

5u + 2(20 – u) = 73

3u + 40 =73

3u = 33

u = 11

11 questions were answered correctly.

Alternatively, if questions were answered correctly, John earned 5 * 20 = 100 points.

For every question he answered wrongly,  he will have 5 – 2 = 3 points deducted from the maximum points or 1oo points.

If he answered n questions wrongly,

100 – 3n = 73

3n = 27

n = 9

20 -9 =11

So 11 questions were answered correctly.

Check : 11* 5 + 2 * 9 = 55 + 18 = 73 checked.
