Question

Answer

If the smaller number is u , the bigger number is 2u.

Average number = 9 = ( u + 2u )/2                  multiply both sides by 2

3u = 18

u = 6

Check: 6  + 12 = 18

18/2 = 9

Dear Kiki,

the two numbers are 6 and 12, and the answer is 6 which is the smaller number.

The Check in my solution is to check if the answer correct or not, hence 6 + 12= 18

and 18/2 = 9  which confirmed the answer 6 is correct. Checking is to confirm that answer is correct. So the answer cannot be 9 which is the average number.

I think Kiki thought that “9” in your checking column is your answer!  😆

Moral of the story – Do read all solutions CAREFULLY next time.
