Question

Answer

1 cake + 6 egg tarts -> $18.60

1 cake + 24 egg tarts -> $29.40

Difference in egg tarts: 24 – 6 = 18 egg tarts

Difference in money: $29.40 – $18.60 = $10.80

18 egg tarts -> $10.80

There are two methods to finding the cost of chocolate cake.

Method 1)

Find the cost of 6 egg tarts.

6 egg tarts: $10.80 ÷ 3 = $3.60

$18.60 – $3.60 = $15//

Method 2)

Find the cost of 24 egg tarts.

When 18 egg tarts -> $10.80

24 egg tarts -> 10.8/18 × 24 = $14.40

$29.40 – $14.40 = $15//

The cost of one chocolate cake is $15.

Since it is just 1 chocolate cake in both cases, the extra cost must come solely from the egg tarts.

Number of extra egg tarts = 18

Extra cost = $29.40 – $18.60 = $10.80

So each egg tart costs = 10.80/18 = $0.60

Going back to the first purchase, 6 egg tarts must cost 6 * $0.60 = $3.60

So cost of 1 chocolate cake = $18.60 – $3.60 = $15 #
