Question

Answer

At first, B : G = 2 : 5

Boys left: 2u + 11

Girls left: 1/2 × 5u = 2.5u (since half the girls left)

In the end, B : G = 1 : 1, which means they are the same afterwards. So:

2u + 11 = 2.5u

0.5u -> 11

1u -> 11 × 2 = 22

Total at first: 5u + 2u = 7u

7u -> 22 × 7 = 154 (Answer)

The total number of children at first is 154.

In the beginning, if there were 2u boys, there were 5u girls in the hall.

In the end, there were 2u + 11 boys and 5u/2 girls in the hall.

2u + 11 = 5u/2          multiply both sides by 2

4u + 22 = 5u

u = 22

7u = 154

There were 154 students in the hall at first.

Check: 2u = 44

44 + 11 = 55

5u = 110

110/2 = 55 checked.
