If Mr Wong had 3u apples at first, he had ( 385 – 3u ) pears at first.  He sold 3u/3 = u apples and

2( 385 – 3u )/5 pears.

142 = u +2( 385 – 3u )/5                multiply both sides by 5

710 = 5u + 770 – 6u

u = 60

3u = 180

He had 180 apples at first.

Check : 385 – 180 = 205

180/3 + 205 * 2/5 = 60 + 82 = 142      checked.

Small typo, “He had 180 apples at first.” Your calculation is correct, though.

Thanks for the prompt assistance. Any idea how to answer without algebra method? It wasn’t taught at P5 level…

I don’t think @waterflow is using the “algebra” method.  Algebra usually involves at least 2 variables.
