Question

Answer

If Mr. Tan deposited $u in the first day,

he deposited $ 3u, $ 9u, $ 27u and $ 81u from second to fifth day.

Note : on second day , he deposited 3*u = 3u, on third day, he deposited 3u *3 = 9u, and so on.

81u = 1239.1

u = 15.3

So he deposited $15.3 in the first day.

Note: The question a bit ambiguous. At first, I took it as he deposited 3 times as much as the total deposit  on previous day and can’t get round off figure. So probably the question actually meaned he deposted 3 times as much as he deposited the previous day, not including the  amount in the bank before deposit.

Interesting problem.  I think you are right in your assumption, @waterflow.

On the 1st day: p

On the 2nd day: 3p

On the 3rd day: 9p

On the 4th day: 27p

On the 5th day: 81p

81p = $1239.30

p = $1239.30 ÷ 81

= $15.30 //
