In total $1904 was collected.

Sales from children tickets  = $ (1904 – 896)/2 = $504

Sales from adult tickets = $ (1904 – 504) = $ 1400

If each child ticket cost $u,

Number of  children tickets sold = 504/u

Number of adults tickets sold = 2* 504/u = 1008/u

(3.5 + u) *1008/u = 1400                multiply both sides by u

1400u = 3528 + 1008u

392u = 3528

u = 9

504/u = 56

56 children visited the zoo.

Check : 56* 9 = 504

12.5 * 56 * 2 = 1400

1400 – 504 = 896 checked.
