Question

Answer

(a) Pattern 1  — 5 circles

                      2—-5 + 3 = 8 circles

                      3 — 5 + 3 + 3 = 11 circles

pattern 4  have  5 + 3( 4-1) = 14 circles

(b)

So for pattern n , there are 5 +3 ( n-1)   circles.

Test the pattern 1, 2 and 3 and see if the number of circles matched with the pattern. If it is correct, then very good chance the general term is correct.

5 + 3(n-1) = 302

3(n-1) = 297

n-1 = 99

n = 100

Pattern 100 have 302 circles
