Question

Answer

Firstly, the length of the big square = √64 cm = 8 cm

If the height of the right angle triangle is u cm, the base is  ( 8 – u ) cm by inspection on the left diagram.

By inspection on the right diagram,

length of the shaded rectangle = ( 8 – u ) cm and breath of the shaded rectangle = ( 8 – 2u ) cm,

so

2 ( 8 – u + 8 – 2u ) = 20

16 – 3u = 10

3u = 6

u = 2

So area of the shaded rectangle = 6 * 4 cm² = 24 cm²

I would conclude that the ratio of the length to breadth of the shaded rectangle = 3  : 2 but it is not so obvious before calculation.
