Question

Alan and his 5 friends spent a day at an amusement park. They paired up to have bumper car rides so that each person paired up once and only once with each of the other 5 friends. Find the total number of rides taken by them altogether.

Answer

If the five friends were A, B, C, D and E respectively, then the possible rides were

Alan with each of the 5 friends, 5 rides in all

A with B,C,D and E, 4 rides in all.

B with C,D and E, 3 rides in all.

C with D and E, 2 rides

and finally D and E, 1 ride.

Total number of rides were 5 + 4 + 3 + 2 + 1 = 15

Not sure if this is in the syllabus, but think it is  reasonable for P6 students to exercise his own independent thinking to try to solve this question which is a bit harder than normal question.
