(b) If Bob had $ 9u at first, he used $2u to buy 16 caps.

He used $ 9u/3 = $ 3u to buy 4 caps and 5 pairs of shorts.

Each cap cost $ 2u/16 = $ u/8. Each short cost $ (u/8 + 30)

3u = 4 * u/8 + 5 (u/8 + 30)          multiply both sides by 8

24u = 4u + 5u +1200

15u = 1200

u = 40

9u = 360

He had $360 at first.
