Question

Hihi, does anyone know how to solve this qns with Model? Is the additional 12 included in the 96 given away? Thks

Answer

Here is another way to think about it with less algebra.

Since 96 = 84 + 12, we can imagine A giving B 12 and 84 (the dotted arrows). That means B now has 84 + 12 + 84 = 180 more than A.

If A has u, then B has 3u. So 2u = 180 and u = 90.

Thus at first A has u + 96 = 90 + 96 = 186.

@Ling38: if we visualize the problem as above, we can think of the 12 as part of the 96 given to B.

Let Box A have u bookmarks at first.
So Box B must have u+12 bookmarks.

Now,
3 (u – 96) = (u + 12) + 96
3u – 288 = u + 108
2u = 288 + 108 = 396
u = 198 #

Oops… my bad 😳 .  Thanks @waterflow!

If box A has u bookmarks,
box B must have u-12 bookmarks.

So,
3 (u – 96) = (u – 12) + 96
3u – 288 = u + 84
2u = 288 + 84 = 372
u = 186 #
