Question

hihi, does anyone knows how to solve the below with model? Thks

Rachel had 48 sweets less than Nisha at first. After Rachel gave away 12 sweets, Nisha had 4X as many sweets as Rachel. How many sweets did Nisha have?

Answer

This solution uses model. After giving away the sweets, Rachel had u sweets and Nisha had 4u sweets. Difference is 3u = 12 + 48 = 60. So u = 20. That means Nisha had 4u = 80 sweets.

If  Nisha has u sweets at first, Rachel must have u – 48 sweets

Assuming that Rachel DID NOT give away the sweets to Nisha,
4 ((u – 48) – 12) = u
4 (u – 60) = u
4u – 240 = u
3u = 240
u = 80 #
