Question

Answer

Looks like question was not copied correctly? I am guessing it is this:
"Joe and Nancy had 282 stamps altogether. Nancy gave 62 stamps to Joe.
Now Joe has 5 times as many stamps as Nancy. How many stamps did Joe
has at first?"

If that is indeed the case, then it is quite straightforward.

We know the total number of stamps 282 did not change.
So at the end Nancy has u stamps and Joe has 5u stamps.
Thus u + 5u = 6u = 282. So u = 47.
Joe had 5u - 62 = 173 stamps at first.

CHECK:
  Before: Joe = 173 and Nancy = 282 - 173 = 109
  After : Joe = 173 + 62 = 235 and Nancy = 109 - 62 = 47
  235 /47 = 5.

Ok… hmm… you are assuming that “Nanny” is a typo mistake for “Nancy”.

Your working makes sense if it is a typo.
