Question

Nick and David went shopping together with a total sum of $90.  Nick spent twice as much as David. The amount David had left was $9 more than what he had spent. He had twice as much money left as Nick.

(a) How much money did David spend?

(b) How much money did Nick have at first.

Answer

Nick Spent 4u and David spent 2u

David left 2u+9 and Nick left 1u + 4.5

At first David has = 2u + 9 + 2u = 4u + 9
At first Nick has = 1u + 4.5 + 4u = 5u + 4.5

At first altogether they have $90 = 4u + 9 + 5u + 4.5
90 = 9u + 13.5
9u = 76.5
u = 8.5

a) David spent = 2u = $17 ###

b) At first Nick has = 5u + 4.5 = $47 ###

Tks Ender

we understood the concept of deriving the answer, however, why did you starts with 4U and 2U?

Because the question say Nick spent twice as much as David. So Nick spending to David is 2 : 1 . But I chose to work with 4u : 2u instead. Because the next statement says Nick is left with half of Davids when David is left with 2u+9.

I could work with Nick spending to David as 2u : 1u. But then David is left with 1u + 9 and Nick is left with half of David, which is 0.5u + 4.5. Much messier with work with decimal points. But can be done.
