Question

Jack is 5 years older than his sister Jill. Their combined age was 36m years old m years ago. How old is Jack now.

Answer

Slight mistake, Chief.

Jack’s age now -> J

Jill’s age now -> J – 5

m years ago,

Jack -> J – m

Jill -> J – 5 – m

J – m + J – 5 – m = 36m

2J = 38m + 5

J = (38m + 5) / 2

Tricky indeed. Most students forgot that to find the age

m years ago/later, they will need to minus/add m years

to both individual ages.

Let J be Jack’s age now.

J + (J -5) -m = 36m

2J – 5 = 37m

2J = 37m + 5

J = (37m + 5) / 2
