Answer

1) ” Everthing displayed on the shelves ________ to be removed by tomorrow,” the manager instructed.
a) has
b) had
c) have
d) having

Everything is an indefinite pronoun, just like “everyone”, “everybody”, “everywhere”.  We use singular verbs for these pronouns.

So the answer should be (a) has.

2)It was thanks to the ________ of a neighbour that the fire which broke out in Mr Ong’s house was discovered before it could spread.
a) duty
b)chivalry
c) tenacity
d) vigilance

The best word should be (d) vigilance.  It was vigilance that allowed early detection and prevented the fire from spreading.

No problem at all.  Yes, answers for those bootlegged past-year papers have always been suspect.  Unfortunately there is no “official” correct answer as the exam setters will never give their answer keys to the pirates.  It is through public sharing that we can really explore and get a better understanding of the questions and answers.  I’ve been corrected many times before by other members of the community and I appreciate those feedback very much as they allowed me to learn.

1) ” Everthing displayed on the shelves ________ to be removed by tomorrow,” the manager instructed.
a) has
b) had
c) have
d) having

The answer should be Has.

Using Elimination

Had = past tense (not suitable)

Have (Plural form – not suitable – Everything indicates singular)

Having (Continuous form – not suitable)

2)It was thanks to the ________ of a neighbour that the fire which broke out in Mr Ong’s house was discovered before it could spread.
a) duty
b)chivalry
c) tenacity
d) vigilance

The answer is Vigilance

Using Clue Search

Duty = (Indicates that the neighbour owes a burden of responsibility – which he does not in this case)

Chivalry = (Indicates bravery)

Tenacity = (Indicates determination)

Vigilance = (Indicates Alertness)

The tone of the question does not seem to praise the neighbours bravery nor determination. Instead, alertness seems to fit best in this case. Hence, vigilance would be most suitable in this case.
