a. Let X be the original price of the fan.
(0.8X + 0.5X) x 1.07 = $222.56
1.07(1.3X) = $222.56
X = $222.56/1.391 = $160
b. *Corrected*
Original price of 2 fans = 2 x $160 = $320
Discounted price of 2 fans before GST = $222.56/1.07 = $208
Overall discount = ($320 – $208) /$320 x 100 % = 35%
Thanks very much Chiefkiasu !
But the answer key says 35% is the answer for b.
Pls advise !
Thank u !

Is the answer for (a) in the answer key $160? Or something else?
Hi Chiefkiasu,
Answer for a) is 160 only .
Thanks

Well, working backwards, if the original price of each fan is $160 and the overall discount is 35%, then the discounted price should be 65% of $320 which is $208, which does not match the $222.56 that Mr Tan paid.
$222.56 is the price AFTER GST.
The discounted price before GST is 222.56/1.07 = 208
(320 – 208)/320 x 100 = 35%
Oh my goodness. I forgot about the gst completely! Thanks BigDevil for solving this mystery.
Thanks very much Chiefkiasu and BigDevil !!
