Disclaimer: I am not an English expert, what I am about to say is just my opinion.
My choice is “protect”. I would think that “defend” is to be used to fend off another party, ie to defend themselves from a predator’s attack.
On the other hand, “danger” (while that can be a predator, it can also be falling rocks), IMHO, would better associate with “protect”.

Both are correct and acceptable.
(It may be true that the Singapore education system always demands one “correct” answer. But it is also true in this case that both are correct and acceptable. If the teacher claims that either is wrong, she is mistaken.
P.S. These are pretty hard questions for Primary 2!)
