Question

Leon has 3 cards. Each of the cards has a different whole number on it. When he adds the 3 numbers, he gets 15. When he multiplies the 3 numbers, he gets 72. What is the difference between the greatest and smallest numbers on the cards?

TIA!

Answer

Guess and check?

try 72 (factors) first. This is more limiting on the number of tries to do .

72=9×8 = 3x3x2x4 (break down fully for easier “joining” to 3 factors below)

=3x6x4           (sum is 13)

=3x12x2          (sum is 17)

=9x2x4             (Sum is 15) correct.

Diff=9-2 =7#

(can present above in table.)
