Question

Hi I would appreciate if you could help me with this question that appeared in Nanyang 2015 P5 Maths exam.

A group of pupils from School A, School B and School C collected a total of 5700kg of old newspapers. Each pupil from School A collected 12kg. Each pupil from School B  collected 15kg. Each pupil from School C collected 16kg. Given that 1/5 of these pupils were from School A, 1/4 of the remaining pupils were from School B and the rest were from School C, how many pupils were from School C?

Thank you;)

Answer

1 – 1/5 = 4/5

1/4 x 4/5 = 1/5

For 1u of pupils from school A, there are 1u of pupils from school B and 3u of pupils from school C.

12×1 + 15×1 + 16×3 = 75u –> 5700

1u –> 5700/75 = 76

3u –> 3 x 76 = 228

There were 228 pupils in school C.

12×76 + 15×76 + 16×228 = 5700 (correct)
