# Question

Hi all , pls help

Ali , Bernard and Charlie shared some stamps. The ratio of Ali’s stamp to Bernard’s stamp was 1:3. After Charlie received 1/3 of Ali’s stamps and 1/2 of Bernard’s stamps, the number of stamps he had doubled to 308 stamps. How many stamps did Ali,Bernard and Charlie have altogether ?

Source: n.a

ratio of Ali : Bernard stamps is 1:3. Multiply both sides by 6. The ratio now will be 6:18

6/3 = 2

18/2 = 9

2 + 9 = 11 units (Charlie received from Ali and Bernard)

308/2 = 154

154/11 = 14 (1 unit)

24 x 14 = 336

336 + 154 = 490

Ali = 6 Unit

B = 18 Units

2 Units  + 9 Units  = 154

11 Units = 154

1 Unit = 14

Total 24 Units + 154 = 490

Alternatively,

Ali’s stamps : Bernard’s stamps
1 : 3
6u : 18u

(1/3) x 6u = 2u
(1/2) x 18u = 9u
11u ——- 308/2 = 154 (Charlie)
1u ——- 154/11 = 14
6u + 18u = 24u ——- 14 x 24 = 336 (Ali & Bernard)
336 + 154 = 490 (Ali, Bernard and Charlie)

Ans : 490 stamps.

(Note : Just noticed that the working is similar to the other answer; there is a slight difference in a few steps only.)

A : B = > 1 : 3 => 6 : 18

From the above Ratio we let Ali be 6u, and Bernard be 18u

Charlie received 1/3 of Ali, i.e. 2u
Charlie also received 1/2 of Bernard, i.e. 9u
And that double it to 308
That means All that Charlie rceived from Ali and Bernard is half of 308 stamps, i.e. 154 stamps

2u + 9u = 154
u = 154/11 = 14

In the end, Ali has 4u, Bernard has 9u and Charlie has 308 stamps,

Altogather they have 4u + 9u + 308 = 4(14) + 9(14) + 308 = 56 + 126 + 308 = 490 ###
