# Question

Mrs chew and mrs lee went shopping with total of \$2155.

mrs chew spent 1/3 of the money on handbag.

mrs lee spent 3/5 of her money on a ring.

the ring cost \$495 more than the handbag.

how much money did mrs lee have at first?

Source: Ngee Ann Primary

Qn is most likely “Mrs Chew spent 1/3 of “her” money on handbag

Consider drawing branch when a total amount keeps breaking down.

Step 1:  Branch out a diagram and write down information:

All money (\$2155)

Mrs Chew (       )                                  Mrs Lee (       )

Not spent 2/3      Handbag 1/3(    )      Ring 3/5(     )        Not spent 2/5

Step 2:  Think for a “convenient” number of u (LCM of 3 and 5 is 15u)

Step 3:  Recall “the ring cost \$495 more than the handbag.”

Input the no. of units.,  analyse the branch diagram… and Solve

All money (\$2155) (#7. 70u+\$825)

Mrs Chew (#4. 45u)                    Mrs Lee (#6. 25u+825)

Not spent 2/3      Handbag 1/3            Ring 3/5           Not spent 2/5

(#3. 30u)                 (#1. 15u)              (#2. 15u+495)     (#5. 10u+ 330)

See #7.   2155 =70u+825 –> u=19

Mrs Lee at first (see #6) = 25u+825 = \$1300#

yes SAHmom, I miss that out!

thks a lot for all the help 🙂

let mrs chew have 3 units of money and mrs lee have 5 parts of money at first.

3u + 5p = 2155

1u +495 = 3p

making parts the same,

9u + 15p = 6465

5u +2475 = 15p

9u + 5u + 2475 = 6465

14u = 3990

1u = 285

3u = 285 x 3 =855

2155 – 855 = 1300

EQ1: 5 Units Mrs Lee + 3 Unit Mrs Chew = 2155

EQ2: 3 Units Mrs Lee – 1 Unit Mrs Chew = 495

EQ 3 = EQ 2 * 3:  9 Units Mrs Lee – 3 Units Mrs Chew = 1485

Eq 3 + EQ1: 14 Units Mrs Lee = 3640

5 Units Mrs Lee = \$1300

Just use simultaneous equations.

An alternative.

Mrs Chew :
3u ——- 2u + 1 handbag
1u ——- 1 handbag

Mrs Lee :
5p ——- 2p + 1 ring
1p ——- 1 ring/3
5p ——- 5 rings/3

1 ring ——- 1 handbag + 495
3 handbags + (5 rings/3) ——– 2155
9 handbags + 5 rings ——– 6465
14 handbags + (495 x 5) ——- 465
1 handbag ——- (6465 – 2475)/14 = 285
1 ring ——- 285 + 495 = 780
(780 x 5)/3 = 1300

Ans : \$1300.

This is a Matrix  question.

 Buy Left Total Chew 3u 6u 9u Lee 3u + 495 2u + 330 5u + 825 Total 14u + 825

495 ÷ 3 = 165

165 × 2 = 330

14u + 825 = 2155

14u = 2155 – 825 = 1330

1u = 1330 ÷ 14 = 95

5u = 95 × 5 = 475

475 + 825 = 1300
