# Question

mrs lew ordered 82 popsicles to be shared equally by 41 students in her class. all the boys were present but some girls were not in school that day due to a dancing competition, after giving each student who was in class one extra popsicles each, mrs lew still had 1 popsicle left.

how many girls were not in school?

there were twice as many boys as girls who turned up in class that day. what was the total number of girls in mrs lew class?

Mrs Lee intends to give each child 2 popsicles each (82 pcs for 41 children).

Take away 1 popsicle leftover–> 82-1 = 81 (81 pcs given out, 3 to each child because each one has 1 extra)

No. of children present –> 81/3 = 27

27 is 3 units, boys 2 units, girls 1 unit.

No. of girls present  —> 27/3=9

No. of boys present —> 18 (all boys are present)

Total no. of girls in class —> 41-18 = 23# (i.e 9 girls are present, 14 girls are absent)

I would solve the question as follows :

(a)
82/41 = 2
82 – 1 = 81
81/3 = 27
41 – 27 = 14

(b)
27/3 = 9
9 + 14 = 23

Ans : (a) 14 girls; (b) 23 girls.
