The figure below shows 2 identical equilateral triangles CDE and FGH which overlapped each other. The length DF, FE and EH are equal. The area of the figure is 49 cm². Find the area of triangle CDE.

Hi, I’ll label the central point of the figure as X.

Recognise that the small triangle FEX is 1/4 the area of the larger triangles. Hence, you can divide the total area by the number of small triangles found in the figure, which is 7. 

Area of CDE is therefore 49/7*4 = 28 cm square.
