Question

Adam and Rahmad shared some beads. If Adam gave 1/3 of his share to Rahmad, Rahmad would have 70 more than Adam. If Adam gave 1/5 of his share to Rahmad, Rahmad would have 10 more than Adam. How many beads did Adam have at first?

Please help. thanks

Answer

An alternative.

Scenario 1 : If Adam gave 1/3 of his share to Rahmad, Rahmad would have 70 more than Adam,

After :

Adam : 3u – 1u = 2u

Rahmad : 2u + 70

Before :

Adam : 2u + 1u = 3u

Rahmad : 2u + 70 – 1u = 1u + 70

Scenario 2 : If Adam gave 1/5 of his share to Rahmad, Rahmad would have 10 more than Adam,

After :

Adam : 5p – 1p = 4p

Rahmad : 4p + 10

Before :

Adam : 4p + 1p = 5p

Rahmad : 4p + 10 – 1p = 3p + 10

3u ——- 5p

1u + 70 ——- 3p + 10

1u ——- 3p + 10 – 70 = 3p – 60

3 x (3p – 60) ——- 5p

9p – 5p = 4p ——- 3 x 60 = 180

1p ——- 180/4 – 45

5p ——- 45 x 5 = 225

Ans : 225 beads.

1/3 = 5/15

1/5 = 3/15

Adam gives 2u less in case 2

So, difference will reduce by 4u in case 2

4u = 70 – 10 = 60

1u = 60 ÷ 4 = 15

15u = 15 x 15 = 225 (Ans)

Hope it helps 🙂
