Question

Susan had $120 and Patrick had twice as much money as her at first. Susan received some money and Patrick spent some money. The amount Susan received was 3 times as much as the amount Patrick spent.They had the same amount of money in the end. How much did Susan receive?

Answer

At first

Susan -> $120

Patrick -> $240

After Patrick spent 1u, and Susan received 3u, they have the same amount

120 + 3u = 240 – 1u

4u =  120

1u = 30

3u = 90

Susan received $90

Let the amount of money Patrick be x.

susan originally had $120; Patrick had $240

120+3x=240-x

4x=240-120=120

x=30 thus Susan received 3 times of that = $90
