Question

Hi I would appreciate if i could get help with this question:

Miss Ang buys some sweets. If she gives her pupils 3 sweets each, she will have 12 sweets left. If she gives them 4 sweets each, she will need 24 more,

(a) How many pupils are there?

(b) How many sweets does she have?

  Thank you!:)

Answer

This is typical “excess and shortage” type of question.

Total difference = 12 + 24 = 36

Individual difference = 4 – 3 = 1

(a) Number of pupils = 36 / 1 = 36 pupils  #

(b) Number of sweets = ( 3 x 36 ) + 12 = 120  #

or Number of sweets = ( 4 x 36 )  – 24 = 120   #

Hope this helps.

If using algebra method  will be ….

Let the number of  pupils be “x”.

    3x  +  12  =  4x  –  24

    4x  –  3x  =  12  +  24

               x   =  36

(a) Number of pupils    =    x   =   36  #

(b) Number of sweets   =  3x  +  12   =   ( 3 x 36  )  + 12    =  120   #
